If you’re a bookkeeper (or accountant), chances are you’ve muttered this phrase to yourself at least once before: “No one ever told me!” Maybe it was about how to handle company vehicle fringe benefits. Maybe it was about fringe benefits for S Corporation owners. The truth is, no one’s going to hand you all the answers—and that’s okay. The real question is, are you ready to take charge of your career and uncover those answers yourself?
The best bookkeepers out there are resourceful learners. They don’t sit and wait for someone to tell them what to do. Instead, they equip themselves with tools, knowledge, and a growth mindset to figure things out independently.
Here’s a roadmap to becoming a proactive bookkeeper who doesn’t just survive but thrives in this role.
The first step is simpler than you might think. When you’re given an assignment or instructions, always take notes. Whether it’s during a meeting with your boss or a call with a client, document every word clearly. These notes will be your first line of defense when you encounter roadblocks.
Think about how much time you could save by looking back at written instructions rather than scrambling to remember what was discussed. If you’re not in the habit of taking detailed notes, now’s the time to start.
We’re lucky to live in an era where the answer to nearly every question is just a search away. Struggling with software issues? Not sure how to handle a particular tax scenario? Google is your best friend.
Before turning to your manager or CPA for every question, spend 5–10 minutes searching online for solutions. While this doesn’t mean researching for hours on end, taking the initiative to learn something new is always better than sitting on your hands.
Once you’ve checked your notes and conducted quick research, it’s time to ask for help if you still need it. But when you do, come prepared. For example:
- Mention what you’ve already tried (“I Googled X and Y, but I couldn’t find a relevant example for this scenario”).
- Clearly explain the issue or roadblock.
- Ask specific questions so your lead or CPA can give targeted advice rather than starting from scratch.
Showing that you’ve already made an effort to problem-solve demonstrates initiative and professionalism.
One of the unique challenges—and joys—of bookkeeping is that no two days look the same. From employee benefits to new tax laws, business decisions are always evolving. Your job is to stay one step ahead.
For example, if a business owner decides to offer a new fringe benefit to employees, ask yourself:
- Is this benefit taxable or pre-tax?
- Does it comply with federal, state, and local regulations?
- What forms or reports need to be filed?
Online resources like IRS.gov and local revenue department sites are powerful tools. Bookmark them. Use them frequently.
The more you enjoy researching and learning, the better you’ll be at adapting to your client’s or business’s needs.
Here’s the reality—bookkeepers are often the last line of defense against mistakes that could lead to penalties, fines, or lawsuits for small businesses. That’s a big responsibility, but it also makes your role incredibly important.
Your ability to spot inaccuracies, question decisions, and check processes ensures both compliance and financial health for the businesses you work for. Remember, you’re not “just” a bookkeeper. You’re a key player in the success of those you serve.
Even the best bookkeepers need a community to lean on. Surround yourself with other professionals who understand the challenges you face and can offer advice, encouragement, and knowledge-sharing.
Joining a bookkeeping community gives you:
- Access to experienced peers who’ve been in your shoes.
- Answers to niche or uncommon questions.
- A sense of belonging among others who “get it.”
The best part? You don’t have to do this alone.
"Google it" and "figure it out yourself" are only part of the equation. Successful bookkeepers blend resourcefulness with supportive networks to continually grow their skills and thrive.
